On March 18, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson of the US jointly met the press.Wang Yi answered question from the media regarding the role of China on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue Wang Yi noted that on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, China always insists on denuclearization in order to safeguard the international non-proliferation regime, and always insists on resolving the relevant issues through dialogues and negotiations in order to maintain the peace and stability on the Peninsula and the region at large.
The nature of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue is the contradiction between the US and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
As a neighboring and responsible country, China has been making great efforts in promoting the resolution of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue
for many years. At the request of the US, China has facilitated the Three-Party Talks which was later developed into the Six-Party Talks.
The ultimate goal is to create conditions for the contact and dialogues between the US and the DPRK. The important contributions made by China
on this issue are obvious.
When the Talks broke off, with UN Security Council members including the US, China put forward a series of resolutions involving the Korean
Peninsula nuclear issue and played an important role in curbing DPRK's development of nuclear missiles and easing the tension on the Peninsula.
We should notice that these resolutions not only introduce a series of strict sanctions against the DRPK, but also reiterate that we should resume
dialogues and negotiations to maintain peace and stability in the Peninsula and avoid further deterioration of the situation. Therefore, it's our
duties to execute sanctions and our responsibilities to restart dialogues.
